Finding Gratitude Despite the Pain
Being home-bound the majority of the time leaves a LOT to be pondered. In the time my mind wanders, I tend to think about life and other random thoughts. One thing that I have noticed quite a bit is how people can take advantage of the little things in life. I myself am guilty of this from time to time as well. I have learned something though, everything in life has a purpose; the good and bad, the beautiful and ugly, the things that scare the hell out of you.
I have to remind myself to be grateful for all of these things in my life, even my shortcomings. The hardships have matured me and made me stronger than I ever thought I could be. They have humbled my existence and shown me that there is always more to life than what we think, and there is always somebody in life who has it worse than I do. Whether it’s the situation they are in, their thought process about their health, or their support system. However I am grateful for what I DO have in my life and I try to focus less on what I don’t have.
I have learned that little things can make a BIG difference to people in life as well. For example, I worked in Maintenance and Construction (before I became unable to work), and very rarely did I ever get a “thank you” or any other form of manners. When I would have a really bad day, those little forms of gratitude made the difference between me walking out on my job or toughing it out.
My daughter always makes it a point to tell pretty much any person she comes across, thank you. I guess after seeing what I have gone through, she knows that it can make all the difference in a person’s day. It’s worth it just to put a smile on their faces. There is a saying that I absolutely love: “If you can’t help someone, at least don’t hurt them.” Gratitude plays a big role in my life, and I have done my best to raise my daughter to be grateful for what she has, instead of focusing on what she doesn’t have.
